What is Step by Step?

Step by Step is a project for people living in Brighton and Hove. It offers one-to-one long-term support and workshops for people with long-term health conditions, including neurodivergence and mental health, who have struggled to get the support they need.

It supports people whose health conditions are impacting on their ability to live life fully and are unable to access the medical support or therapies they need.

Meet the team – Jim and Asta

What does Step by Step do?

We know reaching out can feel overwhelming. That’s why we focus on small steps, and move at a pace that feels right for you, with our support every step of the way.

We’ll help you engage with services, build the tools to manage your health, and work through any other challenges you’re facing. Once you feel ready, we’ll explore your goals and aspirations together.

Through our workshops and one-to-one support, we can help build self-esteem and self-confidence and create an action plan that’s personal to you.

“You don’t need a diagnosis or to have everything figured out. We’re here to listen and help you take the next steps, however small.”

Who is it for? Is it for me?

Step by Step is for people who:

  • Live in Brighton and Hove
  • Feel isolated or unsure where to start
  • Are not getting the support they need to manage their health
  • Are living with a long-term health condition, including neurodivergence or mental health challenges
  • Want to build coping strategies, tools and resources to manage their health
  • Are ready to take steps to build confidence and self-esteem, and work towards their goals and aspirations

You don’t need a diagnosis or to have everything figured out. We’re here to listen and help you take the next steps, however small.

How does it work?

We start by getting to know you, understanding your situation, and exploring support you need. You can choose how and where we meet; on the phone, by text or email first if that feels easier, or in person somewhere you feel comfortable (like a local café, a park bench, or a quiet space).

Together, we’ll look at what’s going on for you and what support might help. We’ll build a personal action plan designed around your needs, goals, and aspirations, and break it down into manageable steps.

When you’re ready, we also run weekly workshops where you will build coping strategies, tools and resources. There’s no rush, it might take some time before you feel ready to join in, and that’s completely okay.

You decide what feels right. We’re here to support you, Step by Step.”

What about my access needs?

Accessibility means different things to different people. We’ll work with you to find ways of meeting and communicating that feel safe and manageable. This might mean taking things slowly, adjusting the environment, or finding a place that suits you best.

You decide what feels right. We’re here to support you, Step by Step.

How can I find out more?

If you’d like to talk it through or just ask a question, you can get in touch in whatever way feels most comfortable for you – phone, text, WhatsApp, email or video call. There’s no pressure to meet straight away.
